Edna Clair Ferris - Epilogue

Edna Clair Mallory died soon after the last entry in the diary. Her stomach trouble had worsened, at the end she had a perforated ulcer and probably peritonitis as she had an infection of the heart. Eugene Hutchinson Mallory I suffered from terminal depression stemming from the death of his wife, failing health, and the failing economy. Towards the end he stayed in bed and talked, but would not communicate with anyone. Mrs. Collins took care of him and the house. Brother Ben took care of the estate and financial matters. Eugene Hutchinson Mallory I died in 1933 and is buried in Hampton. William (Sidel) Mallory had gone into the Navy and was for a while the personal physician to the Admiral there. He left the Navy and remarried there in secrecy. Shortly before his fathers death, he cabled Ben Mallory for some money. Ben refused. William shot himself in December 1932 and is buried somewhere in the Phillippines. Ben took care of things and little is known about the circumstances. It is believed that William's father was never told and was not aware of the death. Ben's refusal to send money, followed by William's suicide, was repeated in a further tragedy. His grandson, Lee Robinson Jr., phoned, desperately requesting money. Ben refused. Lee shot himself while still on the phone. Judsen Ferris Mallory was living at home during these times and perhaps felt the tragedy most. He is alive and living with his wife in Washington, IA. Eugene Hutchinson Mallory II (EHM 2) was at college during this time and was spared part of the tragedy. Still he lost his mother, father and elder brother in less than 3 years. This colored his personality for the rest of his life. In his words, "Everything good always went away." In 1948, a fire destroyed a manufacturing business he had started in Chapin, 10 mi North of Hampton. He left for Los Angeles and took a job there. His wife sold off what could be salvaged and followed. The old home in Hampton was lost and the family started over from nothing. He is alive and living alone in Van Nuys, CA. His wife, Dorothy Margaret Hoffman, died at home, Jan 6, 1979. Eugene Hutchinson Mallory III (EHM 3) is writing this epilogue now. He lives with his wife, Cynthia Alene Child in Van Nuys, CA.
